Taken around 1943–44 (Showa 18–19), this photo captures a farewell gathering for friends who were about to enlist in the Yokaren (Navy Preparatory Flight Training Program).
This photo was likely taken at Urakami Station before the atomic bombing, around the year 1940 (Showa 15). It may capture a moment of waiting for relatives visiting from Saga, or perhaps a scene just before departing to see them.
The first photo was taken in 1941 (Showa 16) when the elder brother was dispatched to the front. The second photo was taken in 1943 (Showa 18) when the younger brother—my father—was about to depart. He wore his brother’s suit and struck the exact same pose for the photograph. Somehow, my father’s expression appears to carry a sense of pride.
