Taken around 1943–44 (Showa 18–19), this photo captures a farewell gathering for friends who were about to enlist in the Yokaren (Navy Preparatory Flight Training Program).
This photo was taken in August 1940 (Showa 15), likely at the Mitsubishi Baseball Stadium.
The first photo was taken in 1941 (Showa 16) when the elder brother was dispatched to the front. The second photo was taken in 1943 (Showa 18) when the younger brother—my father—was about to depart. He wore his brother’s suit and struck the exact same pose for the photograph. Somehow, my father’s expression appears to carry a sense of pride.
